CHAPTER 15

Wrapped in utter darkness, she realised she had transcended her physical form but was still trapped in an abyss. I'm going to kill Iain Fraser, she vowed, her consciousness drifting between the tangible and the void.

She tried to get her bearings, but she felt lost. How has he done this? she asked, trying her hardest to think of a way out.

As time passed and Alicia’s mind drifted, disconnected from her body, she became increasingly frantic at the thought of being stuck in the dark void.

After a while, Alicia realised she was drifting in and out of sleep, or what seemed like sleep. Thinking about it rationally, she thought she couldn’t fall asleep as sleep was just a form of losing consciousness. She wouldn't need sleep if her consciousness floated around in the ether. This led her on a train of thought that led to asking herself where her consciousness was going when it felt like she was falling asleep.

She had nothing else to do and tried to stay as calm as possible but followed where her mind went when she fell asleep or what felt like sleep.

She couldn’t quite hold on to the thoughts as she fell asleep but kept practising, determined to find out if it led to anything.

After a while, she couldn’t tell how long, as she didn’t have a sense of time in this place. Alicia followed her thoughts just to the point of falling asleep.

Just like she had practised lucid dreaming when she was younger, she remained conscious on two levels: the dream world and the real world. So it was in this space she remained conscious on two levels: the darkness and sleep world.

As she stepped into the dream world, her vision suddenly came back. She could see light again.

She squinted her eyes against the sun and was aware she was lying on her back in a field. She opened her eyes to see blue skies and felt long green grass around her. A gentle breeze washed over her body, cooling her. She sat up and looked around her. She could see hills in the background and some type of village with white-painted houses nearby.

She lay back down again, feeling the elation of not having a care in the world. What a beautiful life, She thought as she hummed a tune to herself and waved her arms up and down at her side, feeling the soft grass. She took a deep breath and smelled the fresh smell of clean air, grass and wood burning somewhere in the distance.

She smiled to herself.

As she lay, she heard someone calling her name.

It was faint at first, but she heard someone calling out, “Alicia, come and get something to eat.”

She jumped to her feet, looked down, and saw she wore a breezy summer dress, its fabric adorned with vibrant floral patterns that danced in the gentle breeze. The dress, with its delicate spaghetti straps and flowing hem, accentuated her graceful movements as she walked toward the voice of her mother.
